BADMINTON RANKING

Wellington’s Best Players

(Bx

Shuttle.)

With the close of the badminton season the time has arrived to attempt a ranking of the ten best men and the ten best women badminton players in Wellington. The task is far from easy; whatever the placings, it will be impossible to give general satisfaction. There will always be good and cogent reasons advanced to prove that certain players should be higher, or lower, and that others should not be there at all, and others still who have been omitted should have been included. The greatest difficulty is met with in placings below the first four or five, for then we arrive at a standard that is not beyond the ability of a number of players to maintain. One player is little better, if at all, than several others. It must be said that some of the players were guilty of most inconsistent performances throughout the season, and that before the end the enthusiasm of a number appeared to have worn off. No u~etul purpose can be served by passing in review the type of play of the players ranked. That has been done on numerous occasions in these columns when reviewing the inter-club matches. It should be made clear, however, that because A can beat B, A is not necessarily a better player than B for ranking, which involves a consideration of how the two players perform against several other players. A may beat B decisively enough, but’ in matches against a given number of players B may win more matches than A. That player is the best player who has most wins when pitted against all the other ranked players. My ranking for the 1936 season is, therefore MEN. 1— J. Neale. 2— E. A. Roussell. 3 — E. J. riictyard. 4— G. W. Knight. 5 — V. Dixon. 6— G. Gould., 7— J. Vaughan. 8— G. A. Pearce. 9 — N. Hull-Brown. 9—W. Jupp. TO—N. Hull-Brown. WOMEN. 1— Mrs. A. D. Latham. 2— Mrs. H. E. Binning. 3— Miss D. King < 4— Miss Z. Gastie. 5— Miss C. Phillips. 6— -Miss M. Leach. 7 — Miss F. Ferme. 8 — Miss V. Gray. 9— Miss I. Clarke. 10—Miss J. Denby.
