A PROTEST STRIKE

Miners in Lanarkshire London, September 13. As a result of a huge demonstration by 30,000 Lanarkshire miners Instructions have been given for the launching of a one-day strike on September 14 as a protest against the treatment of the stay-in strikers at the Blantyre Colliery of William Dixon and Company, whose manager, Mr. Ritchie, refused to allow food to be sent down the mine. Twenty of the, 54 underground strikers have already been brought to the surface owing to illness and other causes. Those brought up at the weekend were all unconscious, and were sent home in ambulances. The remainder have been without food since September 10, and are compelled to drink dirty sump water. MEN LEAVE MINE Failure of Pit Lights (Received September 14, 8.20 p.m.) London, September 14. The Blantyre stay-in strikers returned to the surface yesterday and were greeted with cheers by ' 5000 sympathisers who walked to the pit gates and carried them home shoulder-high. The men stated that they were forced to surrender owing to the failure of the pit lights. They maintained their spirits underground by singing to the accompaniment of a tincan band. One said: “Seven slices of bread is all I have had since Thursday.” _______
