Open to Public Yesterday Despite the very - unfavourable weather conditions, many hundreds of Wellington people paid a visit to the Union Company's magnificent new trans-Tasman liner Awatea, which was open to the public yesterday afternoon. The liner was open for inspection from 2.30 p.m. until 5 p.m. Shortly after midday the first of the sightseers arrived at the Queen's Wharf, and lined up at the gangway waiting until 2.30 p.m. When the heavy rain set in early In the afternoon, there were several hundred people waiting, and the Union Company decided to save the expectant sightseers a thorough drenching by opening up the Awatea then and there. Though the rain showed no signs of easing, and the heavy southerly which sprang up did not improve matters, there was a constant stream of visitors to the Awatea all the afternoon. It was not known last night how many people inspected the Awatea, but there must at least have been three to four thousand.
