ESPIONAGE CHARGE
Former American Naval
Lieutenant (Received July 24, 7.45 p.m.) Washington, July 23. Closely following the case of Thompson a grand jury indicted John Farnsworth, a former naval lieutenant, ou a charge of peace-time espionage in selling confidential information to Japan. It is alleged that accused took a book entitled, "The Service of Information and Supply,” from the Navy Department and later sold it to a Japanese agent.
A Los zVngeles cable dated July 6 stated that Harry Thompson, a former United States navy yeoman, was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment on his conviction for conspiracy to sell secret navy information to an agent in Japan. Jle was considered to be the first peace-time spy caught in America. The judge declared that the defendant’s youth and the fact that he was “not of a criminal type," induced him not to impose _ the maximum sentence of 20 years' imprisonment.
