Work May Be Completed In October A LONG RECESS LIKELY The present session of Parliament is expected to be completed by about the middle of October, according to a statement made in an interview last night by the Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage). “I think we will be able to prepare and pass all the legislation that is urgently required within the next three months,” said Mr. Savage. “We will be able to slacken off the pace now, for I consider that there will be no need to hurry through the remainder of the legislation we have in view for this year.” Referring to the plans for next year, the Prime Minister said he could not yet indicate at what period the House would sit. He would be absent for several months attending the coronation and later the Imperial Conference in London, and the Minister of Finance (Hon. W. Nash) would be away from the Dominion for a longer period. “Unless something unusual arises within New Zealand, I do not think it will be necessary to call Parliament together for a short • session early in the year,” added Mr. Savage. “It would be a waste of everyone’s time. There is some big work to be done in affairs concerning the British Commonwealth of Nations. Apart from marketing, which will be one of our biggest jobs, and the development of trade generally, the question of defence will have to be discussed. If it is necessary, however, a short session of Parliament will be held to deal with any urgent matters.”
