MONOWAI’S CRUISE
Prize-Winners at Fancy Dress Balls
In the course of the cruise of the Monowai to the Islands a wonderfully varied programme of entertainment was enjoyed by the 320 excursionists on board. Apart from excursions and deck games, other amusements were provided in the form of moving pictures, a ‘‘movie star quest” ball, and on the last night of the cruise, in the sheltered waters of Fort Fitzroy, a gala dinner and fancy drass ball. The prize-winners were as follows; — Gaia fancy dress ball.—-Most original costume: Ladies, Mrs. A. M. Taylor (Sydney), ‘‘Return of the Swallow”; gentlemen, Mr. Rowe (Greenmeadows), “bootblack.” Best costume made on board: Ladies, Miss Smith (Auckland), “soup kitchen”; gentlemen, Mr. Drummon, jun. (Whangarei), “scarecrow.” Best costume brought on board: Mr. and Mrs. Thomas (Yeoual, New South Wales), “Indian chief and squaw”; spotlight dance, Miss N. Jenkins (Palmerston North), and Mr. Dalgleish (Auckland), Miss Masters (Stratford), and Mr. Purcell (Oto.rohanga). In the True Lovers of South Seas ball, prizes for the best native costumes were won by Mrs. Clapcott, Miss Arthur, Miss Conway, Miss Douglas (Auckland), Mr. Cumming (Sydney), and Mr. Brinsley, jun. (Dunedin). Another bright and amusing function was the Film Star Quest ball. Prizewinners were:—Miss Goodwin, Miss Bishop, Miss Maxwell, Miss Shirriff, Miss Kellaway and Miss Goodwin, all of Auckland, who featured the Dionne Quintuplets and nurse; Miss House (Hawkes Bay), Miss Boucher and Miss Callaghan (Auckland), represented “our gang”: Miss Basham and Miss Marjorie Anscombe (Wellington), "Mickey and Minnie”; Mr. Ambler (Auckland), “Pop Eye”; Mr. Mockett (Christchurch), “Charlie Chaplin.” Very honourable mention was made of Mr. H. Brusey (Wellington), as “Shirley Temple”; Mr. T. Bevan (Wellington), “Charlie Chan”; and Mr. Scotchmen (Wellington), as “Eddie Cantor.'
