BRIDGE PARTY
League for Hard of Hearing The executive committee of the New Zealand League for the Hard of Hearing (Wellington branch)' held a most successful bridge party in the palm lotinge of the Hotel St. George one afternoon this week. Bowls of Iceland poppies added to the beauty of the lounge. During the afternoon, Dr. William Macdonald, a member of the executive committee said: “I have been asked by the executive committee of the New Zealand League for the Hard of Hearing to thank you all for your presence here to-day. We appreciate it not only for financial reasons, but because we are aware that the success of the league depends ultimately on people knowing about it and the idea behind it. The league, as its name implies, is an association of the hard of hearing for their mutual help, and all its activities', present and prospective, can be traced back to this fundamental idea. It is not simply a matter of the teaching of lip-reading, nor is it simply a matter of helping its members with electrical and mechanical hearing aids, nor is it simply a matter o_f holding gatherings for amusement and instruction. All these activities are rightly part of the league’s existence, but only insofar as they assist toward its main objective, which is to combat that insidious shyness that creeps over people when they begin to lose their hearing accuity, narrowing their lives and limiting their usefulness and happiness. The league, like all national movements, needs starting and its ultimate success depends ou public appreciation of its objects and, to a lesser extent, on public financial support for several years.” Those who made up tables were: Mrs. B. A. Moore, Mrs. W. Macdonald, Mrs. Martin-Innes, Miss Eggieton. Mrs. Barry, Miss A. Kane, Mrs. J. W. G. Brodie, Mrs. Cory-Wright, Mrs. A. Cramond, Mrs. E. W. Dinnie, Mrs. Fl intoff, Mrs. J.
