MANAWATU RACES

Dungarvan in Handicap FIELDS FOR TO-DAY Hunt Cup Steeplechase [By The WatcHeb.) After the recent rains the going is eure to be on the heavy side for the winter meeting of the Manawatu Kacing Club to be held at Awapuni to-day. Good fields are engaged, both in the jumping events and on the flat. There will also be a parade of locally-trained yearlings prior to the first race. Betting will be on the single pool system in fields of five or more, so that there is no likelihood of a single dividend race during the day. The card is as follows:—

The opening event is for qualified hunters and amateur riders. There is little guidance to the form of the pure hunters, but horses like Santoft, King Jlhoraond and Oriel are better known. Padnos and Night, Runner may also be possibilities. The best backed may be Santoft and Oriel.

On recent form Saltspray and Silk Sox are the most likely to be fancied. Hunting Jay, on his best behaviour, should be prominent, and the Te Awamutu representative Valpai has been schooling well. Ethiop’s best form must be taken into account, and Limulus may be a possibility. Aiguille and Royal King may show up. Favourites are likely to be Silk Sox and ■Saltspray.

Jovial Prince and Mirth are bracketed. Alloa is liable to lose bis chance at the barrier, but if he gets away be should be hard to beat. The form is not strong, and many of the runners have raced without distinction. Bon Sante and the Blackmore bracket may be the best of the two-year-olds. Most mopey may come for Alloa and the Jovial Prince —Mirth bracket.

Public form points to the first five or six on the list. The Drone looked un-’ lucky at Rangitikes. and he may be the favourite from Tangled.

PALMERSTON NORTH HANDICAP, of £l5O. One mile and a quarter. Dungarvan .. 9 13 Lapel .... 8 3 Arctic Klug . 9 0 Mustang ... 8 0 Peter Jackson 8 9 Silver Brier 8 0 West Tor ... 8 8 Manawatu .. 8 0 Dungarvan is also in the seven-furlong event, but unless plans are altered he will run here. He has a welter weight, but it is only 31b. more than he won with over seven furlongs at Trentham. Arctic King, Peter Jackson, West Tor and Lapel are other form horses from Trentham. Wiggins will not be on Peter Jackson, as he has gone south to ride at Washdyke today. Peter Jackson is a horse who requires a lot of riding. Mustang, Silver Brier and Manawatu cannot be discarded, but they will have to improve. The favourites may be Dungarvan and Arctic King.

2.41— MILSON HACK HANDICAP, o£ £lOO.

The class of hack in this event is not strong. Quake and De Trop look likely, while Happy Hunting, Terry, Kohika and Garter Red should run well. Most money may come for De Trop and Quake. 3.20—

McRAE HANDICAP, of £l3O. Seven furlongs.

Royal Secret 8 C In the absence of Dungarvan the issue looks very open. The topweights are all likely to make a good showing, but they may be troubled by one or two nearer the minimum. Miss Hushabye. Pukeko. Snowball, Supreme Court and Heat are all capable of making the most of their concessions in weight in heavy ground. The favourites "may be Supreme Court and Pukeko.

BROADWAY HACK HANDICAP, of £l3O. One mile and one furlong.

Wotan and Le Grand are bracketed. On recent form the bracket, Blue Garter, Maestro, Taillight, and possibly Middle are the probable public fancies. Le Grand ran fair racee at Wellington. The lightweight division will have to improve. The best backed may be Maestro and the Wotan-Le Grand bracket.

No Rehandicaps. There are no rehandicap conditions attached to the Grand Nationals or the Winter Cup this year, eo horses engaged in them can win to-day without fear of having their weight for Riccarton revised. End of Season. . To-day’s racing will wind up the lu3o--36 season. Uncertain. Punchestown (National Steeplechase) and Concert Pitch (Winter Cup) are both engaged at the South Canterbury meeting to-day, but it will all depend on the weather as to whether T. 11. Gillett will make the trip Punchestown is no good when heavy ground conditions are ruling. In the event of Punchestown not going, it is unlikely that Concert Pitch will make the trip alone. Kinnoull to Gallop. A feature at Washdyke today will be an exhibition gallop by Queen of Song and Kinnoull. Answer to Correspondent. “Lucky,” Lower Hutt. —£5/14/-.
