ANNUAL BALL

“I” Squadron, Legion of ' Frontiersmen More than 500 dancers were present at St. Francis Hall, Hill Street, last night, when the fifth annual bull of the Legion of Frontiersmen, "I” Squadron, was held, the attendance, despite the bad weather, being greater than on any previous occasion. The ball was certainly the most successful ever held by the legion, and its popularity was a direct tribute to those who arrange it. The hall was attractively decorated with large brightly-coloured Hags which ran from the centre of the hall to the sides, forming a canopy over the dancers. lu the centre hung a large cluster of balloons which were used in the Twilight Dance, when they were released and Hoated down to be caught by the more agile of those on the dance lloor. Tied to one balloon wty> a slip of paper which entitled its lucky possessor to a prize.

Over the gallery was draped a large ensign, and a feature of the decorations on the stage, which housed an excellent orchestra, was a coloured replica of fhe legion’s badge, with its motto ‘"God Guard Thee,” which is also the motto of General Gordon of Khartoum. Flags and bunting were also used in the upstairs lounge and on the sides of the stairways.

During the evening a ballet of eight gave loudly-applauded items and tap dances were also greatly enjoyed. A novelty Monte Carlo dance caused much amusement, the colours of the women’s frocks having much to do with the decision. A sit-down supper was served in the supper-room, where the legion’s colours—red and white—were prominent in the scheme of decoration.

The hostesses for the ball were Mrs. A. Duncan, Mrs. A. Henderson, Mrs. G. Spink and Mrs. G. Hornig, and the official party included Captain T. Thompson, Lieut, and Mrs. A. Henderson, Lieut, and Mrs. A. Duncan, Captain and Mrs. G. Spink, Captain and Mrs. G. Hornig, Major L. McAlister, M.C., and Lieut. K. Maxwell. The committee responsible for the success of the ball consisted of Major L. McAlister, M.C. (chairman), Capbain G. Spink, Lieut. K. A, Maxwell, M. Trooper L. Crane, Trooper G. Preston, Trooper C. Howitt, Sergeant H. Belliam, Captain G. Hornig (secretary).
