Wanganui Collegiate v. ’ Te Ante College ANNUAL RUGBY MATCH Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, July 22. A try scored on the point of time saved Wanganui Collegiate School from defeat in the annual Rugbv match with Te Ante College played at Wanganui tbfe afternoon. Till then the visitors led by six points to three. The match was spoilt by misty rain, a piercing southerly and a greasy ball. Te Ante were unlucky not to have won. Play was mostly confined to the forwards, handling among the backs being impossible. With two exceptions wheji Collegiate broke through, Te Aute played in the home territory in the first spell and were aided by the wind. There were, however, frequent grim forward struggles, relieved by occasional individual efforts by members of both rearguards. The tackling was fearless and hard and was a feature of the match. J. L. Meuli and D. G. Bradley were Collegiate’s best backs, J. R. Sherratt being too closely watched to secure many chances. K. Kaanga,. L. Kainamu. J. Wilson and J. Murray were conspicuous in Te Aute’s chain. Among the forwards AV. P. Green, Di B. Barker, O. C. Martin and W. J. Hyslop were most prominent for Collegiate, and W. Huata f L. I. Raimona, N. Raureti (captain) and W. Tibble the best for Te Aute. S. B. Murphy hooked more of the ball than A. Wanoa After their haka Te Aute surged to the attack. Sherratt, Meuli, Williams and J. J. Palmer (captain) each took part in successive retaliatory moves which were, however, hotly countered. Twice Te Aute drew clo,se to scoring, but were frustrated by a knock-on. Just before halftime W.. Tibble forced his way over for an unconverted try. , When play resumed Collegiate swung into action with a series of determined attacks. The wind did not appear to hamper Te Aute much, the forwards beinl’ better in the loose and concentrating on dribbling tactics. A surge, found the visitors hammering Wanganui’s line, and from a scramble Kiln scored. Collegiate rallied and bustled the visitors, who were penalised in front of. their goal. Meuli succeeded with the kick. In the closing stages Collegiate fought desperately. From 30 yards out G. Marshall picked up from the loose and sent to D. G. Bradley, who scored a great try m the corner, equalising the scores. Ibe match ended immediately afterward.
