NEW DUTIES TO STAND
Australian Decision on Japanese Trade

Canberra, June 22.
After considering information that Japan proposed to invoke trade protection laws which will restrict Australian exports, the Federal Cabinet today decided that the new duties affecting Japan and other foreign countries should stand. A reply to this effect, which will also be conciliatory and expressing a strong desire for an amicable settlement of trade difficulties, will be sent to the Japanese Consul. Cabinet decided to postpone decision on suggested counter moves until Japan actually imposes restrictions as distinct from merely proclaiming them. DUTIES TO BE RAISED Japan About to Act (Received June 23, 1.16 a.m.) Tokio, June 22. The Dome! news agency reports that a decree will be issued to-morrow invoking the Safeguarding Act against Australia, restricting import licences and imposing higher duties. Textile manufacturers are already experimenting with a substitute for wool and the Ministry of Agriculture is planning to subsidise sheep-breeding.
