PRYSICAL TRAINING
Y.M.C.A. Assists Technical College
An offer of the Y.M.C.A. to provide instructors for the training of the boys who take charge of the squads in each house was reported by the director, Mr. R. G. Ridling, to last night’s meeting of the board of governors of the Wellington Technical College. “For many years the physical training of boys has been carried out by the house masters, with the assistance of instructors they have themselves chosen and trained. While such a system satisfied the requirements for the majority of the students, a proportion always requires special supervision and corrective training. Attention has been given to this within the limits of the system,” Mr. Ridlipg said. “The girls have been more fortunate in that their physical training has been in the hands of a specialist for many years past. The board should keep in mind the desirability of appointing a full-time physical training instructor for service among the boys.
“The training of the boys has been given a great deal of thought, and the Y.M.C.A. has offered to let us have the instructors for the training of the boys who take charge of the squads in each house. It would be possible for us to arrange classes for the training of these instructors from 3.30 to 4.30 on certain afternoons in each week. If the boys are prepared to give up their own time to fit themselves for this work, the board might encourage it by making a donation to the Y.M.C.A. for the service of their instructors.
“Our physical training work has been limited because of the clay floor in the gymnasium. To make it really effective, better facilities than we have must be provided. The board should, at the earliest opportunity, make arrangements for the flooring of the gymnasium,”
