OPIUM SEIZED
Find on Board Liner Monowai
MEMBER OF CREW ARRESTED
A substantial “haul” of opium was made on board the Union liner Monowai at Wellington yesterday, the find leading to the arrest of a member of the ship’s crew. The Monowai was boarded on her arrival from Sydney by Customs officials, one of whom, Mr. It. Robson, in the course of bis duties as a searcher found a parcel wrapped in canvas carefully hidden in a ventilator on the top deck. A close, watch was kept by Mr. Robson in company with Mr. A. Boland, another Customs officer. Some time after dark the "plant” was approached by a member of the ship’s crew and, when he had taken possession of the pareel, lie was approached by the Customs officers and placed under arrest. It is stated tliat the canvas-wrapped parcel contained six tins of opium, each valued at £l5 to £2O.
Police Raid at Christchurch

Christchurch, June 22.
Four detectives to-night raided the premises of a Chinese fruit seller in Colombo Street south, arrested the occupant, and seized a quantity of opium. It is alleged that the quantity seized was the largest discovered in Christchurch for many years.
No other arrests were made; tl’.e premises were not a place of resort'for the smoking of opium.
