CHURCH PARADE
Order of St. John
ANNUAL SERVICE Held on the Sunday nearest St. John’s Day, the annual church parade of the St John Ambulance Brigade Overseas took place at St Peter’s Church, Ghuznee Street, last night. Members of the order, members of the St John Ambulance Association, the committee and the nurses of the District Nursing Guild of St John attended, there being present 150 of all ranks.
Dr. J. S. Elliott and Mr. C. S. Falconer, represented the Commandery of the Order of St John and Colonel C. Cresswell, Christchurch, also attended. Among members of the district staff present were the assistant-commission-er, Mr. F. W. Ward, and the acting as-sistant-commissioner, Mr. W. W. Dutton, the District Superintendent, Mr J. Hislop, District Officers Messrs. E. B. Gilberd and C. Meachen, and Lady District Officers Mrs. E. Barltrop and Miss H. McKnight The parade was in charge of the corps superintendent, Mr. F. D. Elvines. Among the corps staff present were the Lady Corps Superintendent, Mrs.-M, Gaby, Miss M. F. Griffiths and Mrs. E. M. Osborne. An imposing display of the brigade colours was made by a colour party, consisting of Corps Officer, S. I. Rockell and Ambulance Officer's H. S. Glensor and J. F. Smith.
The service was conducted by the Ven. Archdeacon Bullock and-the lessons were read by Dr. J. S. Elliott and Mr. F. W. Ward. Mr. Bullock referred in his sermon to mah’s attitude to pain and his reaction to suffering. He traversed _ the origin of ambulance work and paid a tribute to the efforts of the St. John Ambulance Brigade in alleviating suffering. A retiring collection was taken for the benefit of the Ophthalmic Hospital, controlled by the Order of St. John, at Jerusalem.
