Late Mrs. E. W. Dawson

The funeral service of the late Mrs. E. W. Dawson was held at the Lower Hutt Methodist Church on Saturday afternoon. The Rev. P. Paris, of Wellington, who conducted the service, was assisted by the. Rev. H. Peat. The large congregation was composed almost wholly of women who had been associated with Mrs. Dawson in her various activities. Quantities of lovely flowers bore tribute to the esteem in which she was held by the women of the district

The following organisations were represented ab the service:—Wellington Girls’ College staff, Wellington Education Board, the Board of Governors, Wellington College, Hutt River Board, Wellington College Old Girls’ Association, Ministers’ Fraternity, Wellington East Girls’ College, Friendly Society, Rock Garden Society, Toe H, Y.M.0.A., Y.W.C.A., Lower Hutt Red Cross, Lower Hutt Music Club, and representatives of the League of Mothers branches throughout the district. Mrs. Dawson was the second daugh ter of Mrs. Ward and the late Rev Josiah Ward, of the Methodist Church, and a grand-daughter of the late Rev. Robert and Mrs. Ward. Mr. Ward was a Primitive Methodist minister who arrived in New Zealand in 1844. She was also a grand-daughter of the Rev. Mr. and Mrs. Dean, the former being a Primitive Methodist minister who arrived in New Zealand a few years later . than Mr. Ward. Mrs. Dawson gained her M.A. degree with honours ab the University of Otago, and later was on the staff of the Girls’ Colllege, Wellington. She was at one time president of the Lower Hutt branch of the League of Mothers, and it was largely • due to her organising ability and enthusiasm that the league became one of the largest in the Dominion. She was also a member of the committee of the Y.W.C.A.

The Interment took place at Karori, and members of the Wellington College Old Girls’ Association, of which she was late president, formed a guard of honour.

Last night a memorial service in the Lower Hutt Methodist Church was conducted by the Rev. H. Peat.
