The winter in the ranges to the west of Canterbury has been as unusual as the summer was on the plains, and until the last day or two practically uo snow had fallen in the high' country. At Mount Cook the mountains as a rule assume their winter covering about the middle of May. but with the exception of one or two minor storms, there had been no snow until Thursday. The same conditions have ruled on the ranges north of Mount Cook, but the late winter has probably caused nobody any concern—except, perhaps, members of ski clubs.
