DEPOSITS INCREASE
British Savings Banks
(British Official Wireless.)
(Received June 19, 5.5 pm.)
Rugby, June 18.
In a letter to the annual conference of the Trustee Savings) Banks’ Association, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr. Neville Chamberlain, notes that the past year has been marked by a further substantial increase, not only in deposits, but in the number of depositors, particularly in the ordinary departments, which are the backbone of the Savings Banks system. Co-operation between banks and other partners in the national savings movement has continued to be close and fruitful. New trustee banks established under the Savings Bank Act, 1929, adds the Chancellor, have made good progress. During the last year three new banks were established, and no fewer than 26 branches opened by existing banks.
