AT WANGANUI

Century Hurdles and Empire Handicap

FIELDS FOR TO-DAY

Form and Prospects

(By

The Watcher.)

Tlie winter meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club will open to-day, and while the class in the jumping events leaves something to be desired, the fields, taken all round, are good, and will provide a day of excellent sport. The track is in first-class order and will be. faster than the usual winter going, while, even it rain falls, it is a turf which does not get heavy in the accepted sense of the Word. The betting will be on the single pool system (75-25), with two dividends when fields have five or more chances. A running description of the racing will be broadcast on the course for the benefit, ot patrons, and assistance to the betting public will be given by means of a dividend indicator. The card is as follows: —

WANGANUI BRACELET, of £lOO. One mile and a distance.

Donegal and Cometra stand out on form in the gentlemen riders’ race, and will no doubt be the best supported. Prince Reno may improve on his Marton form and trouble the favourites, but the others have no recommendation.

12 40:—* WINTER OATS, of £l5O. Six furlongs.

The running of the Winter Oats may be a bit tricky, as there is no outstanding form. Class is represented by Diatomous and Mother Superior, but if is difficult to recommend either on their recent showings. Diatomous, however, should be better suited by the track and the distance, and reverting to Feilding he should be hard to beat on that form. Gold Mission and Limulns are the best recent form recommendations, and Limulus is. anoti»er whom the track should suit. Dungarvan is fresh, but may surprise. Mother Superior has no form to say she will win, but her class warrants a further trial. The favourites may be Limulus and Diatomous.

3 SO:— CENTURY HURDLES, of £350. Two miles and 104 yards.

The scratching of Speed, and an element of doubt about Silk Sox being started, will leave the Century Hurdle race with a disappointing field, though still sufficient to provide a keen contest. Soloist, Chile and Sporting Song have the best credentials. Soloist appears on the improve'again, and he may be the favourite over the other pair.

BALGOWNIE HACK HANDICAP. of £l5O, One.mile and 100 yards. .

With Mustang likely to be scratched in the hack distance event the next best of the recent form is that of Hunt ng Queen and Le Grand, but possibilities also appear in Teddy Boy, Supreme Court, and Silvaritts, while Calshot and Maestro may show up. Dancing Lady and Hunting Maid displayed good back form earlier in the season, but it is a long time since they did anything to recommend them here. Hunting Queen and Le Grand appear the likely favourites.

STEEPLECHASE. ot

The Grandstand Steeplechase will probably see Cotsfield, Tangled, and Windsor Lad most sought after. All three 'should run well, with little between them, but it would not be surprising to see Tangled the improver. Debut and Kaola have hurdle recommendations, but hardly good enough to be taken confidently in their first start over country. 3.20,-r-EMPIRE HANDICAP, of £2OO. One mile

An excellent field will parade in the Empire Handicap. There is little doubt that the top of the handicap will be best backed. The form of horses like One Whetu, Prostration, and Hazoor is hard to pass by. while Gay Boy, West Tor, Jubilee Song. Clarion Call, and Alchemic must be seriously considered. So far as the topweights are concerned, it must be remembered that they arc at a disadvantage on a turning track, unless they have the luck to get and bold a good early position. The two lightweights at the bottom of the list should run well. Alchemic made a bold bid to beat Prostration at Foxton, add was not far away without the best of luck in running. He has always run well at Wanganui, where he won the Guineas ns a three-year-old. Clarion Call, through Scotch Nation, reads very well, and one would elect this pair to lead the topweigbts a merry chase to-day. BOROUGH HACK HANDICAP, of £l2O.

The largest field of the day is in the concluding event, but it has a substantial tail, and the likeliest division is toward the head of the list. Triune is a good beginner with form to his credit, and Bantry, although not responsible for anything recent of note, is just about due. Possibly he may be better on heavy ground. First Chapter is also in at Napier. which suggests itself as his likely track to-day, but if lie is taken across to Wanganui be will have to be seriously considered. Happy Hunting. Waipiro, Nirht Spi. and Garter Bed have recent form, and among the lot oh the minimum Landlubber showed pace at Auckland. The bulk of the investments may go on the two topweights.
