GARDENERS MEET
Wages and Conditions
Nursery, garden, horticultural, and market gardeners discussed their wages and conditidiis in the Uutt River Board offices on Thursday evefiing. It was stated that while some of the employers were giving relatively good conditions, there were others who paid their workers as low as 3/- a day during the past season. A summary of the wages paid, hours worked, and conditions prevailing was before the meeting. Mr. J. Hall, the Lower Hutt representative of the union, presided, and those present included Mr. M. O’Grady, president of the Wellington Labourers’ Union, and Mr. P. M. Butler (secretary), and Mr. D. J. Keane, organiser.
After discussion proposals ’or presentation to the employers were formulated, and it was decided to ask them to meet the workers’ representatives next Wednesday evening.
