Maurice Edward Alexander, aged 32, employed as teller in the Bank of New Zealand at Mangaweka, appeared on remand in the Magistrate’s Court, Wanganui, this morning before Mr. J. 11. Salmon, S.M., on a charge of stealing the sum of £7500 from the bank’s strongroom last 'Wednesday. He was remanded to appear at Taihape on June 19, and in the meantime ordered to report daily to rhe police at Mangaweka. Bail was allowed. Accused was represented by Mr. W. C. S. Bainbridge, who, when applying for bail, said accused had handed back all the money intact. Detective-Sergeant J. K. Robertson said accused had no relatives in New Zealand, but many friends, and had been employed by the Bank of New Zealand since leaving school. The magistrate fixed bail at: sen £2OO and one surety of £2OO. Alexander has been in Mangaweka for about a year and a half. The bank carried a staff of two, manager and teller The money, it is understood, was in £5 and £1 notes. Following the usual custom of country banks to keep a reserve instead of sending to headquarters for notes, the manager, it is stated, went to replenish the teller s reserve last Friday and then 'discovered that-the large number of notes was not there. The sum was recovered yesterday. _____—
