AMERICAN WOMEN WIN
Wightman Cup Retained
(Received June 14, 6.30 p.m.)
London, June 13.
Tlie American women tennis players retained the Wightman Cup by beating the British team by four matches to three at Wimbledon. Britain's defeat was due to Miss Stammers’s inconsistency. She did not reproduce yesterday’s brilliance, especially against Mrs. Fabyan. and was also very erratic in the doubles, when she lost her service at 4-4. Miss Jacobs, after two defeats, rallied magnificently in the doubles. Results were:—
Singles: Miss K. Stammers (Great Britain) beat Miss Helen Jacobs (U.S.A.), 12-10. 6-1; Miss Dorothy Round (Great Britain) beat Mrs. M. Fabyan (U.S.A.), 6-3, 6-4; Mrs. Fabyan beat Miss Stammers, 6-3, 6-4; Miss Round heat Miss Jacobs. 6-3, 6-3: Miss C. Babcock (U.S.A.) bent Miss M. Hardwick (Britain). 6-4. 4-6. 6-2. Doubles: Miss Babcock and Mrs. .T. Van Byn (U.S.A.) bent Misses E. M. Denrmnn and M. M. Lyle (Great Britain). 6-2, 1-6. 6-3; Miss Jacobs and Mrs. Fabyan bent Misses Stammers and James. 1-6, 6-3. 7-5.
