Nanking, June 13.
While the Kwangtung section of the southern army has been ordered to halt its advance, Kwangsi troops are reported to have clashed with National Government forces. Cantonese military cadets have been ordered to be prepared to go to the front. War fever is seizing Canton. The Kwangsi and Kwangtung troops are evacuating Hunan Province, after a skirmish with General Chiang Kaishek’s defensive line, aggregating 150,000 men.
Southerners are nervous of aerial attack on Canton, in view of the National Government concentrating 30 bombing aeroplanes within 250 miles of the town.
The National Government is still sending troops southward hi view of the doubtful attitude of the Kwangsi troops who are reported still to be menacing Hunan. Five Japanese warships arrived at Amoy and landed marines to protect Japanese property. They will proceed to Canton if necessary.
Tlie Exchange Telegraph Company’s Hong-Kong correspondent says that 100,000 Chinese soldiers and civilians participated in an anti-Japanese demonstration at Canton, shouting the slogans, “Down with Japanese Imperialism” and “Fight the ’Japanese.” Virulent anti-Japanese speeches wore delivered.
