COTSFIELD WINS

Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase

TOTALISATOR UP Pladie Takes Open Flat . Event Dominion Special Service. Hastings, June 13. After a very hard overnight frost, the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club experienced a springlike day for the conclusion of their winter meeting. The attendance was excellent, and in consequence the totajisator turnover for the day reached £7119 10/-, against £OOOB on the corresponding day last year. A protest lodged by the owner of Contact against the stake of the Winter Handicap being paid to Stitchbirds owner was upheld, it being found that Stitchbird was trained by an unlicensed trainer. A Speedy Sort. Quake was installed a pronounced favourite ,for the Hastings Handicap, but had little chance with Mata Hari. The latter was in front throughout, and was followed by Quake over all of the .journey. Mata Hari drawing away in the straight to wiu very easily from Quake, with Hunter's Morn a poor third and Helios next. Mata Hari is particularly smart over short courses and outclassed her opponents. Hunter's .Morn gave a lot of trouble at the barrier, and eventually lost any chance he possessed by being badly left. Surprise Favourite. After his indifferent showing on Thursday, it was surprising to find Emotion installed a solid favourite for the Whakatu Hurdles. Tahoma led over the initial jump from Souchong and Manifesto, with Count. Willoynx several lengths last. Souchong soon took charge, and parsing the stands was followed by Manifesto and Tahoma. With four furlongs to go, Tahoma ran to the lead and was just clear of Count Willonyx as the last fence was approached. Here Tahoma swerved straight across the flight of hurdles, losing many lengths, and giving the lead to Count Willonyx, who ran on well under pressure to beat Manifesto a short length, with Tahoma a similar distance away third, and Lord Hereford a close fourth. While Count Willonyx appeared lucky to win, as the result of Tahoma s bungling the last jump, he possibly would have won easily had not Tahoma interfered with him by bad jumping at three fences. Emotion ran poorly and Souchong stopped very badly over the last half-mile. Promising Sort. Backers went strongly for Royal Feast in the Havelock Handicap, but BlueShirt and Blue Garter came in for fair support. Sybil Song, Royal Solo, Royal Feast and Blue Shirt all begun smartly, but at the end of the first furlong Royal Solo and Royal Feast led from Blue Garter and Blue Shirt. Racing to the straight, Blue Shirt had taken the lead, closely followed by Royal Solo. Royal Feast and Blue Garter, and in a fine race to the post Blue Shirt ran on well to hold off Blue Garter, with Royal Feast a close third and Royal Solo a fair fourth. Blue Shirt is a very promising son of Garter Blue, and has only to go on correctly to pay his way. Had not Royal Solo'gone back suddenly on Blue Garter this unlucky filly (she has filled second place on 17 occasions) may have broken an exasperating run of ill-luck. Paco Suited Winner. Cotsfield, Manawatu and Dozie were evenly supported for the Hawke's Bay Steeplechase. Over the early stages, Monarchy, Cotsfield and Strome were most prominent, but with a round to go Cotsfield was followed by Monarchy, Strome and Kaokaoroa. Going down the back straight Monarchy bled and was pulled up, and Cotsfield piloted Strome, Kaokaoroa and Manawatu. After passing the half-mile'post. Manawatu ran up fast, but when looking dangerous two

furlongs from home made a very bad jump, and Cotsfield was well clear ot Strome, Kaokaoroa and Manawatu at the filial obstacle, and he eventually rau home a very easy winner (although the margin was small) from Strome, with Manawatu aud Kaokaoroa following. The slow pace of the early stages suited the non-staying Cotsfield,_ and he jumped too well for the opposition nhen the pace was on. Strome gave a muchimproved display, and it is only a matter of his jumping improving, which will come with experience, and Strome. will win in better company. But for losing much ground at a couple of fences, Manawatu must have been very dangerous. Public Off (he Mark. The public's choice for the Rotopai Handicap was Blygain, but Forum aud Contract were also well backed. Forum, Blygain and Master Cyklon began best, but Master Cyklon was soon in charge, and up the back had Blygain, First Hand and Sunder as his immediate followers. Racing for the home turn, .Master Cyklon was just clear of First Hand, Blygain and Contract, and finishing with determination, be beat Contract by half a length. Blygain was another two lengths away, anil First Hand next. The honours of the race were all uitll Masler Cyklon. as he led practically all the way to withstand many challenges, and then fought off a fast run by Contract. The latter had not the best ot passages, and was called on to make up a lot of ground over the final stages. Blygain had the run of the race, and I’orum again failed badly. Thrilling Finish. Quake, Royal Feast and Royal Solo were saddled up a second time, to contest the Woodlands Handicap, and they provided a thrilling finish, b irst Chapter was a good favourite from Caen and Quake. When the barrier lifted, Quake, Cai u and Royal Feast began smartly, but Quake soon opened up a useful break on the field. As he made the turn into the straight, Quake rau very wide, and Royal Feast and Royal Solo gained many lengths thereby Over the latter part of the race, Quake continued to "bang" badly, and in a great finish Royal Solo got up to beat Royal Feast by half a head, with Quake another head away. Had Quake kept anything like a good course, he must have won comfortably. As it uas bis rider bad difficulty in keeping him oft the jumps erected in the straight. bbegetting a lucky run through on the inside. Royal Solo battled on very gamely, but his stabiemate, First Chapter, let down badly an army of supporters. Hot Favourite Beaten. The final event saw the defeat of the hottest favourite of the meeting, Pakanui, who carried twice as much as the second favourite, Passion Flower.' After Lavina had fed the field for a furlong, I’assiou Flower took charge, and past the half was collared by Pakanui and Lavina. Jbe favourite ran to the front racing toward the straight and looked a certain winner until Pladie unwound a great finishing run to beat Pakanui decisively by half a length. Sunny Sky with a fast late run just beat Passion Flower for third. Results in Detail By Telegraph.—Press Association. HASTINGS HANDICAP, of £7O.
