RUGBY LEAGUE
Representative Trial Game
The chief liiigby League attraction in Wellingtoi this afternoon will be a possibles v. probables match to assist in the selection of a representative team to play Auckland at Auckland on the King’s Birt Inlay.
The full-back position should go to either H. Lilburne. of Hutt, or IV. Spencer, of St. George. The former, if in condition, would be the obvious choice. Spencer, although not perhaps so brilliant, is much titter, and in Kugby League it is fitness that counts. The wipg-three-quarters pick themselves, as on this season’s form C. McNeil and 15. Gladding stand out. The centre position finds two or three men in the running. A. Bramble, of Central, who has pace and is very fust off the mark; G. Newton, of Petone. a good handler and also fast; and L. Merson. who never plays a bad game whatever his position, are the candidates. The five-eighths offering are S. T. Atkins and J. O’Connor, of Petone. A. Jamieson, of St. George, and, if the selectors decide to give the half position to J. Coman,’ A. O'Connor, of St. George. A. O'Connor has a keen eye for an opening, plenty of pace, and is now at the top of his form. Of the forwards the aspirants for the front row are 11. Moisley. J. Cootes. E. Pilcher, and Sutton. Whichever one is dropped will be unlucky. Fitness will probably decide. Of the second row, J. Gunn appears to be the only certainty. Burns, of Hutt, a young player, may make-the grade, but ho has some tough opposition in S. F. Thorpe, of Petone. and L. Simons, of St. George. The last man down should be W. Large, of Hutt, but he will have to produce his best to keep G. Swanberg out. The game to-day at Newtown Parkshould be a fast one with so many men anxious to catch the selectors’ eyes.
