HIGH-PRICED RAMS

Breeders Test Market at Montevideo SATISFACTORY AUCTION (By Cultivator.) Feeling that tliere existed a market for New Zealand-bred sheep in Uruguay, a prominent breeder in that part ol I lie world. Dr. A. C. Gallina! Heber, who

visited this Dominion last year, suggested that tile market might be profitably explored. Two noted breeders, Mr. •lames Reid. Darfield, Canterbury, and Mr. William Rayner, “The ('litis.” Masterton. toward the end of last year sent forward a small pioneer shipment on consignment to test the market at Montevideo. Advice of Hie prices obtained has just come to hand, and from Hie figures it would appear that tiie venture met with encouraging success.

Tile shipment went forward on Hie Hertford from Auckland on August 28 last. Mr. Reid sent two 2-shear stud Corriedale rams, both of which were handsome in appearance with splendid heads and great careases set on short logs. They had dense, robust fleeces, car-

ried right on to the points ol lustrous, eveiu.v-crnnped wool, which was soft handling and entirely free from any sug- | geslioti of hairiness or harshness. | A choice consignment sent forward by Mr. Rayner included one rising 2-shear Corriedale rani, and two Corriedale rimy hoggets. All three were higli-elass sheep with superlative wool. Tile oilier animal created much interest ami realised the highest figure. It was, in the opinion of experts, a typical sheep showing excellent breeding and type. The two shearlings. beside carrying attractive wool, were very even in the carcase with Splendid heads. Two shearling Romney Marsh rain.- were al«i> forwarded by Mr. Rayner, these being deep-bodied, shortlegged rams, with true Romney fleeces.

All the sheet, were carefully selected by the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., through whom the shipment was made. It is satisfactory to learn tiiat tile realisations made are proof I hat it is well worth while New Zealand breeders being alive to the benefits of breeding and forwarding animals to overseas markets. Realisations for Mr. Reid’s two Corriedales wore approximately 130gns. (earmark F 3) and 120gns. (FS), both figures being gross. Tiie highest figure was approximately 179gns. gross, naid for Mr. Rayner’s rising 2-shear Corriedale (305). For the Corriedale ram hoggets the sums paid were 95gns. (452) and 74gns. (451). His Romney’s brought 85gus. (137) and 56gns. (5).
