Past Twelve Months’ Work A considerable decline in the amount of direct assistance granted is announced in the annual report of the Brooklyn auxiliary committee of the Wellington Returned Soldiers' Association. The. reason given for this is that there is more work ottering and the men are able to provide a greater amount of the necessities of life out of their earnings. Every endeavour has been made, with a certain amount of success, to place the unemployed returned soldiers in the district in permanent employment. The report praises the work of Mr. A. G. Burbage, the committee’s employment officer. The membership decreased from 66 to 58, which the report states is unsatisfactory, and is a position which has been given grave consideration by the committee. There are 380 returned soldiers in the district, and an appeal is made to members to induce other returned soldiers whom they know to join.

The report gives the following figures for 1936, the corresponding figures for the previous year being shown in pareuthese: — Financial membership, 58 (66) ; number ou mutual register, 48 (68) ; cases assisted, 12 (54) ; cost of administration, £B/12/6 (£9/19/-) ; subsidised work days. 1037 (682) ; subsidy, £142/17/6 (£l2l/11/-) ; subsidised wages total, £668/19/6 (£447 19/3) ; unsubsidised work days, 2161 (1096) ; unsubsidised wages, £1572/9/6 (£792) ; total made available in work and assistance, £226S (£1283/IS/7) ; men placed in permanent employment, 27 (15). Centring in the club rooms, which were extended last October, the social activities of the committee have been highly successful, A women’s club has been formed.
