PIERROT CONCERT
Wellington Dramatic Society’s Troupe at Island Bay
Pierrots with their ruffles and pompoms were very popular 25 years ago, but evidence was given on Wednesday night that a pierrot troupe can give as good entertainment to-day as then. The pierrot troupe of the Wellington Dramatic Society provided a programme of amusing and musical items at the Masonic Hall, Island Bay, where it was shown that the art of putting on a good show of this kind is not forgotten. Items followed each other quickly and efficiently, encores being eliminated in spite of the audience’s demands.
With an opening chorus from the “Count of Luxembourg,’’ the programme continued witii solos and choruses, interspersed with tap ballets and solos and humorous “thumbnail sketches.” Those contributing to the humour of the programme were Miss I. Small, Messrs. G. Power, M. Caehemaille, C. Somerville, A. Barr A. Haley G. Jackson and G. Phillpott. Songs were given by Miss I. Small (“Yodelling Song”), Mr. Alec Barr (“Live, Laugh and Love”), Miss Hilda Webster (“Smilin’ Through”), Mr. M. Caehemaille (“The Words are in My Heart”), Mr. C. Somerville (“With Her Head Tucked Underneath Her Arm”>, Mr. M. Caehemaille (“Song of the Highway”), Mr. A. Haley (“Sergeant-major on Parade”). Mr. Jack Glennie and Miss Audrey Daniels, both excellent dancers, took the solo tap dances and led the ballets. “The Unmelody Four” combined both singing and drama, while “Topicalities,” sung by Messrs. C. Somerville, G. Power, A. Haley and M. Caehemaille, was cleverly given. “Tell Me, Pretty Maiden ” from “Floradora,” was delight,ul, sung and acted by Misses M. Turner, G. Jones, H. Webster, and B. Cimino, Messrs. C. Somerville, G. Power, A. Barr and A. Haley. Mrs. A. Haley was the accompaniete.
