Although a larger crowd than ever gathered at Epsom the exodus from Loudon was later. It is becoming later every year. During the morning the roads were little busier than normal. Heavy clouds and n chilly wind made it an overcoat Derby. There were fewer gipsies to be seen on the downs. They are fast disappearing and declare that the Derby is becoming more select every year. After lunch the crowd, believed to be a record, stretched in a solid mass from Tottenham Corner to the grandstand. The Derby was a magnificent race. Mahmoud's time was a record. The jockey. Charlie Smirke, does not know the moaning of nerves. He displayed superb coolness and judgment, rind did not attempt to force the pace. Carioca was early away nnd led to the half-mile from Midstream and Pay Up. Th.'inkorton stole the load down the hill from Bala Ilissar and Pay Up. and was throe lengths ahead into the straight, but was unable to stay. Mahmoud shot up, with Taj Akbar gallantly attempting to overhaul his stable companion. Mahmoud, however, won easily. The crowd in frenzied excitement cheered the Agn Khan as Mahmoud was led in. Mahmoud is a lieautiful grey horse, only the third of that colour to win the Derby.
The Agn Khan, overcome with delight, said he h.'id realised his ambition to win tho Derby three times. Two seconds- after the Derby winner passed the prwt the result had been transmitted by Cables and Wireless Ltd. to New York. Buonos Airrw and Cape Town. It was known in Australia within six seconds.
