Politics and Farmers’ Union

Sir, —'That the great majority of members of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union will endorse in the main your leading article of yesterday’s date is certain. AVhetlicr Air. Polson's retirement from the presidency of the Farmers’ Union will be taken in time to prevent a disruption of that body that has done so much for the farming interests remains to be seen. It is regrettable that Mr. Polson after such a meritorious record in the interest of the union should have been guilty of such indiscretions as he has dteplayed of late. Whatever one’s political views might be, it must be realised that legislation empowering the Government to purchase the Dominion’s dairy produce as from August 1 next has been placed on the Statute Book. As this legislation is but giving effect to a definite pledge to the electors of the Dominion, any attempt by Mr. Polson to cause apprehension in the minds of the dairy-farmer cannot possibly do any good, but on the other hand it might do incalculable harm. Would it not be more to Air. Polson’s credit were he to emulate the more patriotic attitude of the Leader of the Opposition, who, after having strenuously opposed the Bill giving effect to the Government’s intention, said in effect that as undoubtedly the legislation would be passed, he would do all in his power to make the scheme a success? —I am. etc., A MEMBER OF THE UNION. Plimmcrton, Alay 28.
