CAMP 4 EVACUATED
Everest Expedition MONSOON IN THREE WEEKS London, May 19. A copyright message from Mr. Hugh Ruttledge, leader of the Mount Everest expedition, sent from Camp 3, states: ‘‘Since further snowfalls are probable Mr. Smythe and I, consulting by wireless. decided to evacuate Camp 4 temporarily. Messrs. Smythe and Shipton and the porters arrived here after a brilliant descent. We must now wait until the snow clears.”
The ‘‘Daily Telegraph” says: “The Mount Everest climbers are facing a desperate race with the monsoon which arrived at Ceylon yesterday, ten days earlier than it was expected. It should reach Mount Everest about June 10 if it crosses India with its usual speed, and further climbing will then be impossible. The climbers, who thus have now only three weeks left, experienced a further setback through snow compelling the evacuation of Camp 4.”
