GRAIN AND PRODUCE
Canterbury Potatoes Quiet Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, May 20. With the acute (shortage of supplies which existed at Auckland last week, relieved by the arrival of consignments ex Karetu and ex Waipiata, the market for potatoes has a slight easing tendency. More potatoes are now coming to hand from farmers, although not in very.large parcels as yet. Quotations have receded slightly in sympathy with the situation at Auckland, nominal f.o.b. prices now ruling being £6/2/6 for whiles and dnkofns, with odd sales being effected, at £6/5/-. Suttons are being quoted at £6/7/6. .June deliveries are being quoted at £6/5/- a ton f.o.b. The Kartigi has on board Approximately 2006 sacks irom Lyttelton and .3060 i'rom Timaru, mostly for the Auckland market. The Waimarino and the Waikouaiti will leave for the north next week, and these ships between thorn should clean up all May contracis. deliveries of which have, in a number of cases, been delayed. Merchants advise that complaints are still coining to hand from Lyttelton about over-weight sacks, due to excessive quantity of soil left adhering to the potatoes. Rejections of over-weight sacks may accordingly be expected. Quotations foi; oats remain unchanged. A number of li’n?s have changed hands lately, but the quality offering generally is reported to he not very good. ' There is a fair inquiry for chaff on the basis of £2/12/6 to £2/15/- on trucks to farmers. The market for feed hurley remains steady at recent quotations. The market for good whole fowl wheat is still not very active, large quantities of undergrade continuing to come to hand. Prices are unaltered. Because of the difficulty in securing reliable information, the onion market is hard to gauge. As far as can be gathered., f.o.b. quotations are nominally £5 to £5 10/-. The market for peas is quiet, and there is n seasonal quietness in the small seeds market, with quotations nominally the .same.
