Factories Amendment Bill
Sir, — I. note in your columns of yesterday that Air. Richards, the member for Roskill, puts forward (lie plea that industry properly organised should be able Io stand up to all the changes proposed in the Bill. Unfortunately, however, Mr, Richards quotes figures which do not support his contention. Tie says: Iu the boot and shoe industry the cost, of a year's production was £562,900, the value of production £1.192.000, and the wages paid in respect of this production £344,500, or 32 per cent, of the total value.
Mr. Richards does not see that the cost of the raw material includes wages paid in respect of its production, and that other large sums were paid, in the form of taxation, as wages to teachers, policemen and even politicians. So long as the Labour Party shows such a poor grasp of business and economies, so long will many people be afraid in spite of Air. Savage’s assurances. —I am, etc.. F.H.B. Masterion, May 16.
