SODIUM LIGHTING AT AUCKLAND

Devonport and Takapuna POWER BOARD MANAGER’S RECOMMENDATION Dominion Special Service. Auckland, Al ay 20. Provided the Devonport and Takapuna Borough Councils can arrange bhe necessary finance to install a new system of sodium lighting, as outlined by the manager of the Maitemata Electric Power Board, Air. A. Main, in •i special report, these two boroughs should have the finest: lighting system south of the line. Ju his report, Mr. Alain said that the board’s officers had given the matter of street lighting a great deal of attention, and they considered that there would be a sufficient improvement in the lighting to surprise pleasantly the general public. He considered it prudent to allow the board's officials to show definitely what could be done on a fairly lengthy stretch of main arterial road in Devonport, if the Devonport) Borough Council approved of the proposals. “We can .give Devonport and Takapuna a system of lighting that would probably be the best in the world.” said Mr. Alain. “Sodium lighting is the most preferable for lighting arterial roads. All we ask is for an opportunity to show what) the board can do.” The manager pointed out that tne board's officers were in favour of sodium lighting for arterial roads only. The report did not mean that any local body within the board’s area should not install whatever lamps they wanted. “Sodium lighting is no good for shopping areas,” he added. “If sodium lighting is installed at Devonport and Takapuna the sodium lighting will be ‘tapered’ off near the shopping areas where gas-lllled lamps will be installed.” Air. J. Quiniven (Alayor of Takapuna) said that for a long time Takapuna had felt that improvement, in street lighting in the borough was badly needed. “1 don’t like the bluey-green lights they are trying out in Devonport,” he said. “They might be all right down at O'Neill's Point cemetery.” WOMAN LIKES GREEN LIGHT Following is a copy of a letter re-' eeived by the chief traffic inspector, Air. L. S. Drake, on the subject:— “Dear sir, —In reference to the Lambton Quay street lighting, I think they are the finest in Wellington, and trust you will put: your foot down solidly against having any alterations made. And in regard to the poor individuals who are complaining about their complexions, I can assure them they look better under that light than they do under any other. It would be a great improvement to have those lights in all our streets.—Yours very sincerely, ‘Bctone Lady'.”
