FAREWELL AFTERNOON
Wellington Horticultural Society The committee of the Wellington Horticultural Society gave a delightful afternoon at the Pioneer Club yesterday to bid farewell to Mrs. Charles Haines and Miss A. E. Eglin, who will leave shortly for a trip abroad. As befitted a horticultural gathering, the room was most beautifully and artistically decorated with late autumn flowers and berries. A bowl of pink and scarlet autumn-tinted hydrangeas stood on a tall stand in one corner, and a delightful effect was created by a small table decorated with a large basket containing golden broom, spindleberries, freraontia, and the deeper gold-toned and crimson chrysanthemums. The refectory table at which afternoon tea was served was decorated most charmingly. A large bowl in the centre held pink polyanthus roses, blue forget-me-nots, ageratum, spindleberries and the delicate fronds of maidenhair fern, while from it, for almost the length of the table, came trailing sprays of green smilax, terminating in small baskets containing a touch of spring in the way of primroses, with berries and ferns. Mrs. R. Arlow, Mrs. F. W. Petherick and Mrs. A. J. Du Pont, were responsible for the decorations. During the afternoon a presentation was made to the guests of honour, each receiving a green, leather-bound book for them to use for horticultural notes while abroad, as they will be visiting shows while in England and Scotland. Mrs. Haines was also presented with a shoulder spray of spindleberries, freesias and pink roses, and Miss Eglin with a spray of brown freesias, and velvet-brown and gold pansies. Among those present were Mrs. Knox Gilmer, president of the Wellington Horticultural Society, who wished the guests bon voyage on behalf of the society, Mr. and Mrs. G. S. Nicoll, Mrs. L. Sievers, Mrs. 11. D. Bennett, Mrs. R Arlow, Mrs. A. J. Du Pour, Mr. and Mrs. N. A. Grant, Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Fox, Mr. J. T. Waugh, Miss Jacobsen, Mr. J. Bell, Mrs. F. It. Petherick, Mrs. W. 11. Grapes.
