Strawberries in May Proudly carrying a little cardboard box, an officer of the Salvation Army Men’s Home, Miramar, called at “The Dominion” office yesterday. In the box were five or six strawberries, several of good size and all partly ripened. “Miramar sunshine for you,” said the officer as he poked the strawberries with a forefinger. “Tell them in Auckland about this.” It was explained that no special effort lias been made to develop and ripen the strawberries. Like Topsy they “jest growed.” Change of Control. The Wellington City Council has agreed that the traffic department, hitherto under the supervision of the town clerk, be placed under tlie jurisdiction of the City engineer. Loans for House-building. The Tawa Elat Progressive and Beautifying Association decided at its annual meeting that the Government be asked to make it possible for people owning sections in Tawa Flat to obtain Government loans to build houses. Interest in White Heron. A white heron has been attracting the attention of residents in the southeastern portion of the Ashburton county for* some time. It has taken up temporary quarters in a gravel pit on a farm at Eiffelton. Salary Cuts Restored. The 5 per cent, cut has been restored to the Leeston Town Board’s employees. The decision, which entails an expenditure of an additional £l5/15/a year, was made at the monthly meeting of the board. Man Loses Three Fingers. When his right hand, came In contact with a circular saw as he was working at Standard Motor Bodies Ltd. yesterday afternoon, Mr. J. H. Wagg, bodybuilder, 9S Waipapa Road, had three of his fingers severed, lie was taken to hospital by the Wellington Free Ambulance. Reunion Arranged. The committee formed after the parade on Anzac Day to arrange for a reunion in Wellington of ex-members of the Otago Regiment and other Otago and Southland units in Wellington has received a most satisfactory response. At least four senior officers who served with tho regiment intend to be present, and all other ranks will be represented.

Carpenter Injured. Meeting with an accident while engaged on work at Queen Margaret College yesterday, a carpenter, Mr. Allen Day, 23 Mantell Street. Seatoun, received a lacerated wound over his left eye and concussion, lie was taken to the hospital by tho Wellington Free Ambulance, aud was later aide to return to his home.

Car Registration Service. The arrangements that, have been made by the Rost and Telegraph Department for the registration of cars, as published yesterday, will apply to only the larger offices of the department. These will keep open until 8 o'clock every night in the last week of this month, from -May 25 to Saturday, May 30, inclusive.

Walked Through Shop Window. A remarkable escape from serious injury was experienced by a customer at a large emporium in Palmerston North yesterday, when he mistook the door of a display window for the exit and walked through a large plateglass window. With his attention diverted to the parcel he was carrying, the man walked on to the raised floor of the window, missed the background pattern and crashed through the glass. He received nothing more serious than cuts to one of his hands.

Inland Air Mails. There was brief reference to inland air mails at the meeting of the council of tin's Wellington Chamber of Commerce last night. The Canterbury chamber wrote suggesting that the two bodies should co-operate in arranging for representations to be made to the Government that the old timetable between Dunedin and Palmerston North be reverted to, to make posting times more convenient on the northward flight:. Mr. H. S. Fairchild, the secretary, reported that he had replied pointing out that the 8 a.in. closing time in ■Wellington on the southward flight did not offer anything at. all satisfactory to Wellington. The Canterbury Chamber of Commerce urged that support for air mails could only be expected wheu there was a gain in time sufficient to warrant use by business men.
