OBITUARY

Rev. John McCaw The death occurred at Wellington yesterday of the Rev. John McCaw, aged 77 years. Mr. McCaw was born in Dumfriesshire, Scotland, and came 10 New Zealand with his parents and family in 1880. For 12 years he was in the building trade in Gore, and ■lt years ago he entered the ministry, being stationed for 13 years at Tuapeka West as Presbyterian home missionin'. He then removed to the North Island, and at Mangaweka was ordained into the full ministry of the Church. Thereafter he was in charge of pastorates at Levin and at Upper Hutt, from which place he retired about eight years ago owing to illhealth and came to live in Wellington. After his retirement, when his health permitted, he took charge of (ho pastorate of Lyttelton and Taumaranui. He is survived by his wife and one son, Mr. John Todd McCaw, a teacher at. Rongotal College. The late Mr. McCaw was a brother of the Rev. James McCaw, former Presbyterian minister of Knox Church, Lower Hutt, and Mr. W. A. McCaw, Invercargill. Four sisters. Mesdames A. The death of Mr. William Hinchey. chairman of the Southland Power Board, occurred on .Saturday, at the age of 71, reports a Press Association telegram. Mr. Hinchey was born in Invercargill and had 11 long record in public life. He was several times mayor of Bluff and chairman of the Bluff Harbour Board. For several years he was chairman of the Southland Power Board and he held many other public offices. Mr. Hinchey unsuccessfully contested the 'Wallace seat against the Hon. Adam Hamilton at the last general election. He is survived by a wife, a sou and two daughters. Mr. G. L. Laurence The death has occurred of .Mr. G. L. Laurence at the age of 82, states a Dominion Special Service message from Palmerston North. He is survived by his widow, two sons and four daughters—Mr. Earl Laurence (Kairanga), Mr. Reg. Laurence (Palmerston North), Mrs. R. Kirkland (Featherston), and the Misses Ida, Olive and Pat Laurence (Palmerston North). Minenkoff, who died in 'Wellington last week at (lie age of 67, was formerly an officer in the Russian Imperial Guards and saw considerable service with Russian forces in the Far East, receiving numerous decorations for bravery. He studied at the Don Cossack Military School at Novocherkassk and served as a lieutenant 011 the Port Arthur fortress, participating in engagements with the notorious Chinese bandits, the Hunhuzes, At the time of Hie Boxer Rebellion lie entered Peking witli the British troops, and subsequently look part in many battles of the Russo-Japanese War. During the next six years, Colonel Minenkoff was decorated by both lhe Japanese and the Chinese Governments for his work in Manchuria. In 1913 he was presented with his son to the Tsar. During the war he received several decorations, including the cross of the Order of St. Vladimir. In the Revolution the colonel fought with General Korniloff’s 'White Army and made a remarkable journey with a secret dispatch across the Caspian Sea ami by horse-back to Omsk, in Siberia, where Admiral Kolchak was stationed. He stayed temporarily with his family in China after the retreat and then came to New Zealand.' Colonel Minenkoff leaves a widow, one daughter and two sons. Mr. W. N. Stephenson
