ONE-TEACHER SCHOOLS

Consolidation Principle Discussed The question of tlie policy to be adopted concerning the consolidation of schools was discussed nt. the annual conference of the New Zealand Educational Institute yesterday, when Mr. A. O. Banner (Wellington) moved "That the N.Z.E.I. is opposed to consolidation as a general measure of policy, but admits that it would be beneficial in certain rural localities, for example, in the case of some oneteacher schools.” Mr. W. A. T. Underwood (North Auckland) moved an amendment: “That this conference advocates the Investigation of all suitable localities for the establishment of rural consolidated schools, and urges the Minister to push on with their consolidation.” This was lost, and a motion moved by Miss V. Curtis (Manawatu) : "That the N.Z.E.I. approves of the principle of consolidation of schools in suitable rural areas, but views with alarm the tendency toward taking rural children into urban areas” was carried.
