Mr. B. Sutherland New President HONOUR FOR MR MAINLAND The Wellington Employers’ Association, at its annual meeting last night, elected Mr. B. Sutherland president in succession to Mr. 11. Mainland, who retired after many years’ office .and who was presented with a chair as a mark of the association’s gratitude foi his service to it. Mr. Mainland was elected a life member, the rules having been altered during the meeting to allow of the election of life members. The office was contested by Mr. Sutherland and Mr. M. G. C. McCaul. Mr. Sutherland is best known as managing director of Self Help Co-op.,
Ltd. He was a member of the retiring executive of the Employers’ Association. At the conclusion of the meeting, Mr. Sutherland, who had assumed the chair upon the announcement of his election, requested Mr. IV. McLay, retiring vicepresident, to make the presentation. Mr. McLay said that, as the oldest member of the executive, he had been asked to prseeut to Mr. Mainland a chair as a token of their gratitude at his long service to the association. Mr. Mainland had been president for 13 years, vice-president for five years, and a member of the executive for a very long time. Mr. McLay’s expressions of appreciation were supported by Messrs. A. JCurtis, T. O. Bishop and S. Paterson. The last-named said that when he first took an interest in the work of employers’ associations, 20 years ago. Mr. Mainland was a member of the executive, and he became president shortly after, lie moved that Mr. Mainland be elected a life member, which was carried by acclamation.
Mr. Mainland replied that from what had been said he realised that what little he had done had been appreciated.
