WELFARE WORK

Hutt Valley WJD.F.U. The monthly meeting of the Hutt Valley Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in St. Hilda s Hall recently, when the president, Mrs. Hawthorn, presided over a fairly large attendance. Bouquets were presented to Mrs. Morris, who is spending the winter in Los Angeles, and Mrs. Graham, who is leaving to take up her residence in North Auckland. During the afternoon an interesting demonstration on cake icing and decoration was given. The monthly competition, a jar of preserved fruit, was keenly contested the winners being Mrs. F. Whiteman first, Mrs. Morris second. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs. Linsay and Mrs. Palmer. N Wellington Central W.C.T.U. The April monthly meeting of the Wellington Central W.C.T.U. was held at the Y.W.O.A. Mesdames Empson and Cullen and Miss Dyson were appointed to a committee to make arrangements for forming a Loyal Temperance Legion, the Baptist Church authorities having offered to grant the use of a room. Mrs. Harry took the devotions. ■ , Mrs. J. C. Webb gave a very interesting account of the Auckland, convention, which was held in the Presbyterian School-room and attended by 94 delegates from the North and South Islands. The value of the “White Ribbon” paper for women’s work'was specially emphasised at the convention, and members were asked to read it well and try to increase its circulation. Mrs. Turner gave two solos, “God Bless This House” and “A Tree.” Afternoon tea was served by Mrs. Hoult and helpers. Wellington W.C.T.U. The Women’s Christian Temperance Union, Wellington District Executive, held a meeting last week in the Petone Church of Christ. The chair was taken by Mrs. Lopdeli, in the morning, and Miss Kirk in the afternoon. Regret was expressed that Miss Jones, Masterton, had to relinquish her office of president. Mrs. J. C. Webb was appointed president in her place. Some time was spent in considering the findings of the annual Dominion conference held at Auckland in March. I' was resolved to reaffirm and support resolutions condemning the drink traffic and any Increase in gambling facilities; and to promote an educational crusade on the subject of temperance, especially among children; also to call on the Christian churches to do their part in this matter. Mrs. Peryraan urged all unions to do their part in increasing the circulation of the “White Ribbon," and in making good use of the paper at their meetings. Devotions were led by Mrs. Lopdell and Mrs. Jensen, and solos were sung by Mrs. Franklin arid Mrs. Diamard. The members of the entertaining union were warmly thanked for their hospitality, and an invitation from the Brooklyn union was accepted for the next meeting of the executive.
