SOUTH ISLAND LAMB
Smithfield Competition London, April 29. The New Zealand Meat Board held a South Island lamb competition at Smithfield. Southland was awarded the challenge shield for the best district. Prizes for the best three individual pens were awarded as follow: MidCanterbury, pen 71, first; North Otago, pen 37, second: Southland, pen 83, third. APPLE SEASON OPENED Growers’ Small Return London, April 29. Viscountess Bledisloe opened the apple season at the New Zealand Offices. The High Commissioner, Sir James Parr, deploring the operations of the middlemen, said the growers received a penny per pound ‘for apples which were sold in London from 9d. to lOd. per pound.
