Operations for the Year Dominion Special Service. ; Dunedin, April 29. During the past 12 months the total deposits in the Dunedin Savings Bank amounted to £2,305,472 iu the names of 34,259 depositors. The extent of the bank’s operations is shown by the fact that during the year the staff handled no less a sum across the counter than £1,700,000 in deposits and withdrawals, the respective amounts being £528,986 (deposits) and £848,011 (withdrawals). The net profit at the close of the year was £19,511, compared with £17,411 last year and. £24,303 in the previous year. The amount paid this year in income tax was £6,435, and commenting on this impost the chairman, Mr. J. H. F. Hamel, said to-day that in- his opinion this tax should be remitted as soon as the national finances permitted, because it was in effect a penalty on thrift and small savings.
