LATE ROY REED

Funeral of Well-known Jockey A LARGE ATTENDANCE The funeral of the jockey Boy Heed, who died as the result of injuries received when his mount fell in a race at Trentham on Tuesday, took place at Karori cemetery yesterday. A striking public tribute was paid deceased, the streets in the vicinity of the mortuarychapel of E. Morris, jun,, in Kent Terrace being crowded with thousands of spectators, while traffic control by city patrolmen was necessary in Kent Terrace. A short service conducted at the chapel was attended by the chief mourners, Mrs. Reed and Mrs. W. Bell. The chief mourners at the graveside were uncles of deceased, the Messrs. Hathaway and Mr. Hobson. Mr. Ashley Reed, who is in Melbourne, was represented by Mr. H. Price, and sent a wreath. The cortege was a very long one, emphasising the respect in which Reed was held. The pall-bearers were Messrs. B. H. Morris, L. G. Morris, H. Gray, S. Wilson, L. J. Ellis, and J. Leach. The service at the chapel and at -the graveside was conducted by the Rev. E. M. McLevie, pastor of Roseneath.

At the conclusion of the burial service Mr. McLevie said that it was not customary on such solemn occasions to add anything, but an exception could be made in this ease. He had been privileged to be present some years ago when Con Reed was buried, and he had never forgotten that day. It was a great revelation to him, for he had been able to see the devotion that obviously existed between the two brothers. He was notin touch with the sporting community, but it had been a revelation to him, not only the devotion that obviously existed between the brothers, but also the respect that’ had been shown by all gathered there as on the present day. In the rush of life it was gratifying to see that the ability to see good in others had not been Jost. There was a large attendance of the sporting community, as - well as the general public. Those present included the Minister of Internal Affairs, Hon. W. E. Parry, and Hon. E. K. Davies, M.L.C.; the Racing Conference was represented by Mr. 11.. 11. Sellers, secretary ; the Wellington Racing Club, which closed its offices from 2 to 3 p.m., by Messrs. C. W. Tringham, Neil McLean, 11. L. Nathan, and H. P. F. Blundell, and Miss D. . McDonald. W. D, Moroney, E. Burgess and J. Coyle. Messrs. J. Hennah, R. J. Murphy, J. Murphy and O. Nelson were among the owners at the graveside. Others who attended were Dr. 11. A. Gilmer, Messrs.
