MANAWATU RACES

President’s Handicap and Awapuni Cup FIELDS FOR TO-DAY Form and Prospects Reviewed

(By

The Watcher.)

With the exception of the weight-for-age event good fields have accepted for the opening of the Manawatu Racing Club’s autumn meeting at Awapuni to-day. The track is in first-class order, and betting will be on the single pool (75-25) system, with two dividends in fields of five chances or more. The principal events to-day are the President's and J. M- Johnstone Memorial Handicaps, and the Awapuni Cup at weight-for-age. The card is as follows: — 12.15— HABERE HURDLES HANDICAP, ot 11150. One mile and a half.

Recent form among the hurdlers is represented by Kaola, Gold Cure, Widden and Gaswyn. Diamond, who had a race on the flat at Wellington, is likely to run prominently, and possibly newcomers like Aga Khan and Glenvane may make a showing. The best backed may ■be Diamond and Kaola. 12-55— AUTUMN MAIDEN PLATE,- of £.lOO.

Alloa ie the probable favourite for the Autumn Plate on his form at Wellington, and he is likely to improve. Battle Pomp, Donegal, Garter Red, Golflen Anne, Martial Lady and Silvanus have to be considered. Most money may go on Alloa and Donegal.

Spiral and Big Dook are the form horsts from Trentham, while Davistock, Ethiop, Arctic King and Qne Whetu eeem most likely of the others, though it is possible for one or two of these on the minimum to spring a surpriee. The best backed may be Big Dook and Ethiop (or Spiral).

There are several possibilities in the haek sprint, Solaria, Ilias, Corowa, Sansfoy, Whyte Melville, Taillight, War Lap, De Trop, Golden Chest and Joviality, all having shown recent form, The result may easily trick backers, but a wellsupported pair may be Whyte Melville and De Trop. 3.55— CLOVERLEA NURSERY HANDICAP, of £l4O. For two-ycar-olds. Five fur-

The field in the Nursery is not strong in class. The best performed are easily Notium apd Capdico, ■while Moquette should be equal to a good showing here. On what has been seen of the other* they will have to improve, though it is always possible with youngsters that they will do so. Most money is likely for Notium and Candieo. 3.35— AWAPUNI CUP. of £3.50. One mile and a quarter. Senior 9 2 Greek Entail .... 8 4 Shepherd 8 4 It looks like the two three-year-olds fighting it out again. Greek Shepherd looks like getting his revenge.

biatonious will surprise if he wins after his dispUys at Taranaki, and Land Tax will also have to improve upon her recent performances. Haut Monde will be backed, though on Trentham running he is very luidiv bandieaiiped against Lordly Knight. The latter beat him here in receipt of .51b. and to-day has an additional pull of 71b. If there is anything in weight, Lordly Knight should again finish in front. Limulus, Courtega, Gold Mission and Lavina, are possibilities on recent form, and Severe has shown signs of coming good in the autumn. If she strikes form she will be a trouble to

the form horses Lordly Knight and Ha.it Monde. 5.0— IE MATAI HACK HANDICAP, of £l3O.

Royal, Banquet, and Dungarvan have Trentham form to recommend them in the Te Matai Handicap, but Red Sand, Wnipiro Soho and Colenso are all prospects. The form of the others will need improvement. .Soho and Colenso may be the ones to trouble the two topweights.
