NEW RAILWAY STATION

Interior Work in Hand Though scaffolding still covers part of the frontage of the new railway station, enough of the structure has been revealed to show that it will be one of the most imposing buildings in Wellington. Granite facings on the entrance to the ground floor, dark and mellow red brickwork, terra-cotta tilings round the windows, and red eordoba tiles ou the roof give the touch of colour which relieves the dignified simplicity of the design, indicating bow imposing the building will be when finished. Impressiveness is conveyed at the entrance by the columns and arch of the portico. Much remains to be done before the building will be finished. Workers are now busy with the laying of plaster, the installation of the electric fittings, the construction of the stairways, and other interior work. Carpenters and brick layers still have plenty to do. and the building still resounds to hammering, scraping and chipping. The arched beams of the concourse are now almost finished, giving a good idea of the height and area of this feature of the buildiug. through which passengers will move in making to and from the main platforms. Behind the station progress has been made with the platform verandas. These are of the new ‘•butterfly" type, as distinct from the old style of ‘•umbrella” roof. • Most of the standards for carrying the veranda roofs are now in place, and over one platform the roofing has been laid. The concrete sides of the platforms have been made, and the pedestrian way filled with spoil. Later this will be capped with bitumen, and the platfujms will be extended right up to the new station building
