R. REED’S FUNERAL

At Karori To-day NOTES AND COMMENTS Judicial Finding on Accident

(By

The Watcher.)

Roy Reed’s funeral will take place today, leaving the mortuary chapel of E. Morris, juu„ 25 Kent Terrace, at 2 p.m. lor the Karori Cemetery, where h:s brother Con is buried. Con died on December 7, 1924, from injuries received when his mount, Lilac Domino, fell in the Trial Plate at Taumarunui the previous day. Purely Accidental. The judicial inquiry into the (all of Hunting Cat in the President’s Handicap at Trentham on Tuesday was concluded at the office of the Wellington Racing Club yesterday. The stewards, after hearing the evidence of the riders in the race, and also from their own observations, came to the conclusion that it was caused by Hunting Cat getting on to the heels of Big Dook, and that the occurrence was purely accidental.

Moderate Success. The wins of Chile and After Money on Tuesday were the only successes credited to Trentham stables during the meeting, though place money and near wins were registered by Chief Ranger and Deficit, while Chile, Sansfoy, Toper, Prostration. Acceptable, and Korero were also in minor places. Shy looked very unlucky to miss in his first start. Improving.

Ton Notch is an improving youngster who 'will do better as the result of her recent racing. Should Come Good. One of the most promising two-year-olds at. Trentham was Liane, by Captain Bunsby out of that good Kilbroney mare Degage. Liane was having her first start, and she improved sufficiently with one run to go with some of the smartest juveniles for the first half-mile at the second attempt.

Unruly Horses. Fractious horses were very much m evidence at Trentham, It raises the old question as to whether it is fair to put the onus on the starter by allowing them to take their places in the field. There was more than one there who would not be allowed to go to the post in Australia. We have a schooling list here, and although it is a drastic remedy it is the best solution of a difficult problem. Soon.

Prostration came on quickly with his rating at Trentham. and he has only got to train on to be an early winner.

Took on the Wrong Race. The connections of Taumau threw awav the substance for the shadow by starting him in the hack cup instead of the highweight. He ran an excellent race in the cup to finish fifth. He was not quite good enough for the strong hack class, but on the race he ran he must have b;en very hard to beat in the weaker highweight field. For Australia.

The veteran jumper Billy Boy tailed the field all-the way in the Rimu Highweight Handicap at Trentham. Few rated his chance seriously, so his performance was no surprise. He lias not been in work long, after a spell, but he looks ii nice health to go on with a preparation. His owner-trainer, R. W. A. Lew’s, will leave with Billy Boy on Friday for Adelaide, to contest the Great Eastern Steeplechase at Onkaparinga on Easter Monday. Shy will accompany him and will race on the flat. Lewis was unlnckv not to get expenses for the trip with Siiy. Mrnavutu Fields.

Witli the exception of tlie Awapuni Clip the fields for Manawatu to-morrow are will filled. The track is in firstclass order. Single pool betting will be in opei'ulion. Ar'ithcr Duel.

Witli Silver Ring going to Australia there will be only three runners in the

Awapuni Cup, and it looks like another duel between the two three-year-olds, Ent(iil and Greek Shepherd. The latter should be all the better for his racing at Wellington.

Low Standard. The lowest weight carried by a handicap winner at the Wellington meeting was 7.5. In the main it was the top of the handicap that did best, which indicates that the standard to-day is not strong. It is many years since a combination like Silver Ring and Silver Streak was able to win four doubles in a season ; in fact, it must be unprecedented, especially as they commence the run at the top of the weights. A Good Performance.

One of the best performances at Trentham was the win of Maine in the Hack Cup. She came home witli a phenomenal run from the rear, and still had her- ears pricked at the finish, though Ellis was riding her hard. Maine looks a prospect for a second-class distance handicap any time, anil she may even be good enough to win one of the cups. Her win was very popular, as she has not only been very consistent, but J. M. Cameron has been out of luck for some time.

Dungarvan. Dungarvau improved with each race at Trentham, and he should be a better horse at Manawatu. It is possible that he might have won on Tuesday for R. Reed. This is no reflection on Broughton, but a horse usually goes better for a rider who has ridden him in the majority of his races. One to Watch.

The three-year-old Le Grand had a reputation as a promising sort last season, and lie was fancied lor a race in Sydney. On his return from an unsuccessful Australian trip, he was gelded and changed stables. He was not produced again until Saturday, when he was second to Clarion Call in the Trial Plate at Trentham. and on the second day lie won the Maiden Stakes. He is a bold galloper, who may stay later on, while he looks certain to wi.n plenty of races. By Posterity from Eulogy (her second last foal), he is bred well enough to go on to the best company.

Worth Following. The two Riccarton hacks Riptide and Rival Shot raced well at. Trentham, but they were not quite good enough. They should be worth following in the south m the near future. Silver Jest was another from the same centre who did not meet, with the best of luck.

King’s Birthday Dates. Tlie executive of the New Zealand Racing Conference discussed during the week-end several applications for changes in racing dates to take advantage of King Edward's Birthday, June 23. The Dunedin Jockey Club was granted June 23, 25 and 27, and it was decided to request the Ashburton Trotting Club to change from. June 13 to June 20, in which case the Ashburton County Racing. Club will take June 6 instead of June 27. and the South Canterbury Jockey Club June 13 instead of June 20. If the Ashburton Trotting Chib will not agree to the change, it may mean the South Canterbury Jockey Club holding a two-day meeting in May. In the North Island the Wanganui Jockey Club and the Napier Park Racing Club weie granted permission to change their dates to June 20 and 23. Form Declined.

Queen of Song was not the mare here this time that she was in January. She looks in need of freshening up lor she Jias had a pretty strenuous time for the past few months. One for Easter.

Argentic ran well in his two starts at Wellington, and with an ounce of luck on Tuesday he would have won. He looks a good prospect for Riccarton at Easter. Looks Well.

The Surveyor gelding Korero never looked better than he does at present, and he reflected this in the good race he ran on Tuesday. If he improves at all he should soon win a race.

Custos was Unlucky. Although defeated by Wild Chase in the Challenge Stakes, Custos was the best two-year-old at the Wellington meeting. He was unlucky to be beaten on Tuesday, and on hi.s breeding be will stay better than Wild Chase next season.

.May Go to Australia. Cuslos is a likely candidate for early season honours in Australia, ills owner, Mr. C. N. Draper, is at present on a voyage to England, but he wit; reiuni to Sydney for the spring carnival. Custodian undertook a, similar mission for the Dunedin owner, but he met with no success through going sore. Consistent. Rereatu raced very consistently at the Wellington meeting. He might run out a better mile on the Ellerslie track at Easter titan lie did in the Thompson Handica p. Variant. Variant appeared unlucky in the Thompson Handicap, but no excuses can be made for her on the seconu day. She appears to be just good enough for placed performances, which heals oat the opinion expressed by her former trainer, A. McAulay. When he had her as a two-year-old she looked like being a good one, but McAulay never Haltered himself that she was anything out of the ordinary. For Easier. Fracas should be an Easter pos: ibilily at Riccarlon. Is Forward. Diamond ran quite a fair race for a jumper in the Maiden Race on Monday, lie has done a fair amount of schooling and should be forward for engagements at Manawatu. Sporting Legislator. The Hun. G. R. Hunter, M.L.C., is secretary to the Canterbury Owners and Breeders’ Association. He has been closely identified with both racing and trotting. Among the light-harness horses he has raced are Isabel Patch. Hard Words. Shoelace and the Futurity Stakes candidate I’hilitrio. In partnership with the Hon, P. C. Webb he has owned the gallopers Gold Pit, Topete, Sapient, Merry Peel. Wino, Matting.!, Forum, Brian Born and Gilpit. Successful Breeder. Mr. G. Murray Aynsley, breeder of Silver Scorn and Silver Ring, two of the best horses of their generation, has no yearlings this year, as he breeds only every alternate year, but he lias three foals, all by Robespierre. A filij from Contempt is the first foal tnis mare has produced since Silver Scorn and a filly from Orange Blossom is a nalf-sistcr to Silver Ring. The third youngster is the first foal 0” Muff. Schooling List. An application for the removal of Tizzy from the schooling list was discussed at a meeting of the executive of the New Zealand Racing Conference. The application was refused. Versatile. The win of Clarion Call 111 the Trial Plate at Trentham on Saturday completed a very interesting record for this Hunting Song gelding. He has had only six races and he lias had three wins, one each as a steeplechaser, a hurdler and a fiat racer. It is not by any means unique to see horses with winning records in each of these department.- One who showed his versatility in a similar direction was Bon Ifeve. fr.,m the same mare as Formless, who produced Saxon Saint, the dam of Clarion Cail. It. i.s in the manner of his wins that Clarion Call Ims an unusual record. In his ease the usual order was reversed, as lie won his first race as a steeplechaser and his second as a hurdler before he took on flat race company. He has the reputation of

being a great, jumper, so it wlil be no surprise. now that he has demonstrated Jiis speed, if he develops into a good-class performer over hurdles or country. It lias been suggested that lie may be in tlie discussions on the Grand Nationals later in the year.

Feildiug Stakes. The Feildiug Jockey Club’s Easter stakes have been raised by £265. The mile and 11 quarter handicap is Io be called the Feildiug Cup, and will tn future be rim at the Easter fixture as was done previous Io 192-1. The change is being made as the Easter stake :s larger ami likely to remain so. The chief event at the spring meeting will be called the Manchester Handicap in future. Auckland Nominal ions.

Nominations for the Easier meeting of the Auckland Racing Club, and forfeit for the Great Northern Champagne, Oaks and St. Leger Stakes, will dose with Mr. W. S. Spence to-morrow at 5 o'clock. Pahiatua Annual. Nominations for all events at the annual meeting of the Pahiatua Racing Club, to be held on April 11 and 13, will close at 9 o’clock to-night.
