PETONE FLOODS

Discussion By Council

Flooding in Petone during recent storms was discussed briefly at last night’s meeting of the Petone Borough Council) Cr. D. M. Dickson said there had been bad flooding in Jackson Street, from Buick Street to William Street, last Friday. Something should be done, and if it could ,not be done the public should be told so.

The Mayor, Mr. A. Scholefield, pointed out that where additional sumps had been provided the trouble had been relieved. Cr. E. T. E. Hogg said the council could not delude itself that it could cure flooding entirely in a place such a little above sea level, except at great expense. The recent storms' had been exceptional, and in some conditions of tide and rain flooding could not be prevented without difficulty.

Cr, J. Huggau said that no matter how many sumps were installed the higli tides would back up the water in the drains.

The Mayor said that with more sumps the water would run away more quickly when the tide flid recede.

Several speakers suggested that the estimates include money for more sumps. The engineer, Mr. C. L. Jackeon, reported that the storm at the end of the month had caused general flooding all over the borough for a short period. Fallen hoardings and slips had had to be cleared away and a gang was clearing up the seaweed and debris from the beach.
