DECISION OF LORDS
Trial By Peers Outlived Usefulness Londoii; February 4. ‘’The House of "Lords by 45 votes to 24 decided that the system of trial of peers by peers had outlived its usefulness. Viscount Sankey, ex-Lord Chancellor, who foreshadowed a Bill o« the matter, said that a noble lord who was the chairman of a company might swindle a gullible public to the extent of hundreds of thousands of pounds, which might be a misdemeanour for which he could be tried at the Old Bailey or the Assizes, but if the same noble lord stole a silver matchbox worth 50/- it would be felony for which lie must be tried by his peers. Lord de Clifford’s trial had cost £7OO. compared with probably £35 if he had been tried at the Old Bailey.
