Washington, Febuary 4.

Senator Borah to-day became the first definite aspirant for the office now held By President Roosevelt when ho announced that he would actively contest for the Republican Presidential nomination and would seek a convention of delegates pledged to him in the Ohio primaries as the first step toward noiubnation. - * > So far Senator Bora’s principal opposition appears to be from Governor Landou (Kansas) and Colonel Knox, proprietor of the Chicago “Daily News. ’ Neither has definitely announced himself as a candidate, but both Indicated that they' would contest nomination. Eastern ' Conservatives are forming strong support for Governor Landon, even though he is a western man, and it appears likely now, according to political observers, that a bitter inter-party fight between Conservatives and Progressives will result, with the former backing Governor Landon and the latter Senator Borah. Support for Colonel Knox has not yet crystallised.

Cancellation of Lending

Authorisations

(Received February 5, 0.15 p.m.) Washington, February 4.

As an indication that President Roosevelt is not only determined to checkmate inflationary moves but is also prepared to curtail the Government’s deflation activities he announced to-day that he had ordered a survey of Federal lending agencies with a view to cancelling at least 1,000,000,000 dollars in lending authorisations. This is interpreted as meaning that the so-called “pump priming” activities of farm and home loan banks and other Government organisations are near an end. It is understood Wat normal sources of credit are now open to legitimate borrowers.

SENATOR’S SCHEME

War Debts to Pay Farmers

and Veterans

(Received February 5, 10 p.m.)

Washington, February 4.

Senator Lewis, who is noted for his .continued agitation regarding war debts, advanced a novel scheme to-day for meeting financial difficulties. Speaking in ironical rein, he suggested that Britain and France pay the '‘six million dollars owed to us,” which could be used to pay veterans and farmers. He pointed out. that the soldiers were being paid for service on foreign soil. His plan envisages debtor Governments issuing small denomination bonds aggregating the amount owed to the American Treasury, which would market the bonds, applying the proceeds to the Government’s needs.
