Entrance to the University

SENATE’S DECISION

The Senate of the University of New Zealand to-day approved a recommendation of the Academic Board and a motion by the vice-chancellor, Professor T. A. Hunter, that the standard of entrance to the university be raised.

The senate also adopted a resolution moved by Mr. L. J. Ayild that the executive committee appoint a qualified person to report on the whole question of the entrance examination.

Professor Hunter’s motion reads:— “That the executive committee be directed to adopt the policy of raising gradually the pass standard in the entrance examination.” The motion by Mr. Wild was: “That the executive committee be instructed to appoint at a suitable remuneration a qualified person to report on the whole question of the entrance examination, and in particular on the following points: (1) The standard of the examination in relation to similar examinations in other universities and to the requirements of New Zealand; (2) the standard in relation to the aims and methods of the teaching of the various subjects in post-primary schools; (3) the standard in relation to that of the school certificate examination; (4) the method and the effects of the scaling of marks; (5) the general procedure of the results committee; (6) the utilising of the estimates of the schools in determining pass or fail in borderline cases, tbe general question of accrediting.”
