Mr. Sullivan said the Government had been impressed with the increasing need for attention 1o scientific research in problems of protection of plants from disease, and, in addition to improvements to the facilities at the plant research station at Palmerston North, arrangements had been made for the continuance of Dr. Cunningham’s services. ~ “This news,” Mr. Sullivan said, ••would no doubt be welcomed by the various agricultural and fruit interests which bad made representations to the Government on the subject. Some months ago Dr. Cunningham had intimated his desire to resign from the Government service with a view to proceeding with work overseas, but because of improved facilities and other factors Dr. Cunningham had now signified ills desire to continue with the department in research into plant diseases, and arrangements had been made by the Public Service Commissioner accordingly.”’
